November 2014 Beads of Courage Day
Once again, GMS members volunteered their time and talent to make some fantastic beads for the Beads of Courage, an organization that provides beads to children who are undergoing medical treatments for serious illnesses. The children receive colorful beads that mark milestones in their treatment, for example, clinic visits, chemo treatments, and losing their hair. The beads we make are special beads a child can choose following a major medical event like a surgery.
Dr. Robert Simmons, Beads of Courage Bead Donation Director and GMS member, expressed his gratitude to GMS for helping raise awareness of the cause and for the great beads we make. He explained that our beads are very popular with the children. He also told us that the quality of our beads has encouraged others to make more polymer clay beads in addition to the glass beads normally donated.
This time we made lots of holiday beads including snowmen, snowflakes, a sparkly "Let it Snow!" snowball, an angel, a Christmas tree, wreaths, even a yucky fruitcake! Juniors guided us with their knowledge of what other kids would like, so we also ended up with some Pokemon beads, some snakes, sandwiches, and even some bacon!
A heartfelt "thank you!" to all of you who gave up just one beautiful Sunday to help a child commemorate a single step on their brave journey.

Mary Gurney embraced a holiday mood and made a sweet butterfly too.
When a child's journey ends too soon, their parents receive a butterfly bead.
