Fern Fossils
DMC Field Trip
Tennessee Valley Rock and Mineral Club
Saturday, July 9, 2016
The Tennessee Valley Rock and Mineral Club (Chattanooga, TN), hosted the July DMC field trip to collect Mississippian/Pennsylvanian plant fossils.
The collecting area was in a creek in a rural area. Charlie Jones, field trip leader, did an excellent job explaining the site, showing us samples, and making sure we were all aware of potential dangers. Other club members were on hand to help field trip attendees too.
Plant fossils were abundant and I saw many beautiful specimens within a few minutes. Collecting was easy. Many fossils were found via surface collecting only and others required minimal shale splitting. Specimens included various species of ferns including horsetail ferns (calamites), bark, and seed pods.
Many thanks to the Tennessee Valley Rock and Mineral Club for another successful DMC field trip!
