Junior Section Easter Egg Hunt, March 2015

There were so many juniors that Junior Section Chair Chrissy Nell-Dybdahl had to divide them into 2 groups: 9 and under and older than 9. It was a pretty day plus the older juniors did a great job of hiding the eggs, so the hunt was very exciting!

After everyone found their eggs, they came inside to open them to see what they found.
There were so many great rocks inside the eggs that juniors had a grand time
trading and sharing with each other.

Junior Section Fossil Hunt, March 2015

Bonney Weathers brought a big bag of sand full of fossils for juniors to hunt. First, he screened out the sand, then he invited juniors to dig in. There was only one main rule for the fossil hunt: if you could identify a fossil you could keep it. Tough rule, but no worries. Bonney and junior member Cam Muskelly consulted fossil books and their superlative knowledge to help juniors identify their finds, so everyone went home with sharks' teeth, turtle bones and scutes, and even some coprolites! I think a couple of pieces of poop fell into my pocket too...

Junior Easter Egg Hunt Report

Dear Juniors,

The 2015 Easter Egg Hunt & Fossil Hunt was a huge success! We saw many new smiling members come with their Easter baskets this year. The ages ranged from 1-17. We were so thankful to have GMS members donate specimens for the eggs. Additionally, Kaci White’s family donated over 70 loaded eggs including the huge ones...thank you! Junior helpers Jack, Nathan, and Jaina had fun hiding the 525 eggs under sunny skies! The parents had loads of fun as well.

We were very lucky to have GMS member Bonney Weathers to join our March Junior Event! He brought very special fossil loaded dirt and sifters. His demonstration was perfectly set up in the parking lot right in front of our building. Juniors found and walked away with sharks teeth, turtle bones, horse teeth, Thorocosaurus teeth, Bottosaurus teeth, and petrified wood. The scopes were available for the juniors to magnify their specimens.

A special thank you to the GMS members who came to enjoy and help the juniors and parents, including Mary, Shelley, Lori, Charles, Chad, and Bill. We hope to see our GMS families at future events.

Sincerely,

Chrissy Nell-Dybdahl
Junior Section Chair
