GMS President 1977-78
Mrs. Frances R. Longley of Atlanta died August 12, 2006
On October 2, 1998, we lost one of the outstanding members of GMS. Charles Longley, along with his wife Frances, was a member since the late 1960's. Charles died of pneumonia.
Charles, a very pleasant person with a shy smile and the manners of a "Southern Gentleman," was a brilliant person who was a past club president, and as a past show chairman, was a vital force in raising the standards of the annual show to its present professionalism. He was a structural engineer and consultant for many large companies. He drew up beautiful plans with layouts for our shows, which we still follow. The only vacations he would take would be classes at Wildacres and field trips to local and far away sites such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Maine and West Virginia. Except for his work his enjoyment was the mineral club. Charles did beautiful chain making and wire wrap and "tasted" other lapidary skills - all done well.
Frances, who has courageously borne his painful stauts of Alzheimer's diagnosis, has continued to be an active member. With a cheerful smile she has always donated home cooking to our events, exhibited at the shows, and shared creative crafts with members.
We will always hold the Longleys in the highest esteem.
