GMS Field Trip
Pennsylvanian Plant Fossils in Georgia
Saturday, February 23, 2025

The field trip to the Durham Mines began as a chilly February morning that warmed up nicely into a beautiful sunny day. Jose Santamaria and Jeff Deere led the trip, which was a joint trip between GMS and the Rome Mineral Society. Twenty-four members attended, a combination of members from either club including those with joint memberships. The site is part of the Lula lake Land Trust and in addition to fossil collecting, which is only allowed for reserved groups, there were also hikers and mountain bikers enjoying the trails.

Once the attendees got their bearings, attendees started making finds, and everyone seemed to be successful. There were many leaves found, including some nice fronds, interesting imprints of Lepidodendron and Sigillaria, and as usual, plenty of bark. Everyone received a guide to help them identify their finds. It turned out to be a great day to collect. A few people left early, but many stayed for most of the scheduled time. The trip ended a little after 3:00 pm.
