GMS Junior Section Field Trip
Easter Eggs and Kyanite in Georgia

Juniors had their first official field trip in several years. The field trip to collect kyanite blades also included an Easter Egg hunt. This was no ordinary egg hunt either, it was GMS style, so instead of looking for candy filled eggs, juniors looked for eggs filled with rocks and eggs!

GMS volunteers hid the eggs around a beautiful farm. Juniors had to wait for a countdown, and then they were off in a flash! After the juniors found all of the eggs, GMS members helped them identify all of their goodies. We even had egg carton “cheat sheets” with potential specimens inside that Tom Faller made for us in case we needed help!

A quick snack of bananas and juice boxes and they were off looking for kyanite. It was so plentiful and so easy to find that they each had several kyanite blades in just a few minutes. Diana Poppelreuter invited juniors to choose a specimen of kyanite they had just collected or a specimen from one their eggs and she wire wrapped it for them on the spot!

Juniors got to see some magnificent horses (from a distance) as well as a sneaky goat, and possibly some elves. It was a lovely day and everyone had a great time! We cannot thank the property owner enough for graciously allowing us to visit her incredible farm. Many thanks also to volunteers Diana Poppelreuter, Cristina Clines, Jessica and Jared Dunn, as well as Charles Carter for arranging this fun trip!
