GMS Field Trip
Tours and Gold in Georgia
Saturday, June 29, 2019

Dahlonega is a great place for people interested in the history and geology of gold in Georgia. The first stop on our trip was a visit to the historic diving bell where we learned the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, and “how” of its fascinating history.

Then we visited the Dahlonega Gold Museum where we were warmly welcomed and treated to a special tour. Everyone there was extra nice to us and they even brought out some rocks for us so we could recognize the difference between gold imposters and actual gold. Plus, we got to see the “secret” gold hidden in the museum.

After that we tried our own skills at panning for gold. I saw several nice pieces of gold, plus lots of beautiful heavy sand. Members cooled off between pans with some watermelon, water, and salty snacks donated by the Sprouts grocery store.

Many thanks to Mike and Lillie for helping set up this trip, the incredible staff at the gold museum, Sprouts for the refreshing snacks, Diana and Juergen for bringing club supplies for the food, Charles for bringing and setting up a tent where everyone could relax in the shade, plus all of the members who attended and made the day so fun!

Curious form of gold. Is it a gilded bird nest? If you want to find out what it is, just go to the museum.

Georgia rockhounds should recognize this one from a famous Georgia geology publication...
