Quartzite, Jasper, and Slate in Georgia
Saturday, August 6, 2016
What could be better than a cool, mountain creek on a hot August day? How about one filled with pretty rocks, seeing the rocks face-polished for you on the spot, a lively game of bocce ball, and ice-cold watermelon donated by the Roswell Lions Club?
GMS members Casey and Terri welcomed field trip attendees to their beautiful creek. They set up a tent for Charles Carter to face polish rocks from the creek. Terri said we could take home as many day lily plants as we could stand. Casey even set up a privy for us!
There were lots of juniors having lots of fun! The boys had super cool water guns and the girls explored the creek from end to end. The girls especially liked finding stripey slate that was tumbled by the creek. Some members brought gold pans and practiced their panning skills, and even though our resident gold panning experts Mike and Lillie determined there was no gold to be found there, it was fun to try! Everyone found some pretty quartz, jasper, and jasper mixed with quartz.
Other GMS members helped with the fun too. Diana Poppelreuter brought bananas and crackers and peanut butter for us to snack on plus she helped clean up at the end of the day. Mary Gurney brought bubbles and games for the juniors. Larry & Pam Clere set up a bocce ball game that I was so sad to have missed! It was fun to watch Charles polish pieces for everyone and see how pretty the rocks were with just a little bit of polishing.
The creek was so cool and the trees were so shady, we almost forgot how hot it was that day. A recent storm dumped lots of rocks on the sides of the creek making it super easy to collect. The hardest part of the day was getting juniors to go home!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Casey and Terri for inviting us back! Thank you to the Roswell Lions Club for donating watermelons. Thanks to all of the GMS members who contributed to the fun. And thanks to Charles for hauling his cabbing equipment there and working so hard to make pretty rocks for everyone!
