Kyanite in Georgia
Saturday, June 11, 2016
GMS members joined Huntsville Gem and Mineral Society members to collect kyanite at one of our favorite kyanite locations. After a little misunderstanding with the directions to the site that caused half of the caravan to get a more scenic tour to the collecting site, everyone went straight to finding kyanite. Blades were readily available right where we parked so it took only a few minutes to get our fill there.
It was a really hot day, but fortunately we were able to dig under the shade of some trees where it was reasonably comfortable. There were a lot of large kyanite blades as well as some nice hand sized cobbles plus a few other larger specimens. There was plenty of mica and some juniors found some excellent mica books. A few people got some specimens of graphite and I saw at least one specimen of tourmaline.
I think everyone was happy with the pieces they found and there were even a lot of extra blades for Huntsville's grab bags!
Many thanks to the property owners for graciously allowing us to collect in such a great place and the Huntsville club for inviting us!

The kyanite is so pretty -- even through the dirt!

The blue gray color of the kyanite is caused by graphite inclusions
