GMS Field Trip
Cretaceous Fossil Location In Mississippi
Saturday, May 21, 2016
After lunch the epic trip continued at a creek in Mississippi. North Mississippi Gem & Mineral Society members greeted us with supplies and snacks. They had screens for sale and handed out old prescription bottles for us to hold our sharks' teeth! They even had a document with pictures and descriptions of the fossils there.
Charles stayed on shore with the North Mississippi club members while I hiked down and into the creek. We splashed around the creek screening for sharks' teeth. Al Klatt and Daniel Miller made good use of a fallen tree and the shade there. They parked on the tree and screened gravel that accumulated by the tree. They were getting about one tooth per shovel. Pattie Donehoo and Michael Gropp walked further upstream and came back with an impressive haul for their first time collecting there! They even donated a bottle of teeth to GMS for the field trip case!
The water was warm and it was fun to see a tooth poking out of the gravel every now and then. Charles had to leave early to do a cabbing demo for the North Mississippi club, but I stayed until I was quite the prune.
Many thanks to Roger Lambert, Matt Lambert, and Jennifer from the North Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society for helping us with the site!
