GMS Field Trip
Kyanite in Georgia
Saturday, November 1, 2014

A cold snap with some brisk winds threatened to put a damper on the November field trip. As we stood huddled together waiting for everyone to arrive, the sun came out and the wind calmed a bit. By the time we were at the collecting site it was still cold, but comfortable. Once we were in the woods picking up kyanite blades, the trees blocked most of the wind and it was surprisingly pleasant!

The property owners were more than gracious for our trip. They got up early to put some horses on trailers and move them to another location, just so we would have a lot of area to search!

Kyanite blades were weathering out around the trees and in gullies so collecting was super easy. The property owner had been moving dirt earlier and told us we could collect as much as we wanted from that area. I got some sand with mica and kyanite there :o)

Nick, a Cobb County Gem & Mineral Society member and geologist, found a boulder of kyanite with a large specimen of graphite on it! With a little help he loaded it into his vehicle. I hope we get to see it all cleaned up some day.

In another pasture that had been off limits before, one of the owners moved a horse to a barn so we could collect there and it was a kyanite jackpot! There were so many kyanite blades weathering out in the drip line of a small barn that everyone got as many pieces as they wanted. There was so much kyanite and it was so easy to find, we finished early and everyone left happy!

We can’t thank the property owners enough for allowing us to collect on their beautiful farm and for their generosity in accommodating us. Plus, we owe a big thank you to Jim Haege for pioneering this incredible location.
