GMS Adopt-a-Highway Field Trip
Various Minerals in Georgia
Saturday, April 19, 2014
GMS members got a rare collecting treat after the April Adopt-a-Highway trash pick up. Casey Sosebee made arrangements with a friend of his to allow us to collect at what remains of an old gold mine!
This mine was one of the most productive gold mines in Georgia. Production began around 1832 and ceased operation in 1913 after a shaft collapsed and the mine was flooded. According to some reports, the mine was producing $1000 per day in the late 1800's.
We scrambled over the tailing piles and dug around trying to tease out its hidden treasures. Several pieces of ankerite were found as well as some specimens of quartz with pyrite. Casey found an interesting crystal which was later identified as zoisite.
Many thanks to Casey for organizing this special collecting adventure!
