GMS Field Trip
Geodes and Crinoids in Tennessee
Saturday, November 16, 2013

This annual field trip with the Knoxville Gem and Mineral Society is a favorite of many GMS members. The day started with several members from GMS, Knoxville, and the Cobb County Gem and Mineral Society enjoying a delicious breakfast before we headed to the lake.

Once we hit the beach, we were greeted by members of the Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society. It wasn’t long before people were finding crinoid fossils everywhere. Many excellent pieces were found including several calyxes and even some trilobites! From there we stopped for a quick lunch on our way to the next location. A nice brisk hike through the woods and we were on the beach again looking for geodes. Daniel Miller and Charles tested version 4 of Daniel’s geode cracker with great success. Everyone found some nice geodes and we ended the day tired but happy.

Everyone is looking forward to sharing this trip with Knoxville again next year!
