GMS Junior Section Field Trip
Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, GA
Saturday, July 19, 2025

Everyone gathered at 10 am at Tellus Museum in Cartersville. Once members were checked in to the museum, they were introduced to Ryan Roney,Tellus Curator, then split into 2 groups. Jason Leatherwood took one group to the Prep Lab where Nedra Bonavita was waiting to show the members how we, as volunteers, clean and prep a piece with the micro blaster. We discussed how we repair and clean minerals and fossils in the collection.

Meanwhile the other group went with Ryan Roney and Aaron Leatherwood to collection storage. They got to see a new display being put together. Then, they got to see how new material is brought in to the museum, cataloged, categorized, and where minerals and fossils are stored.

The groups switched so everyone got the whole experience. Once everyone was done, we all met up and took the members through the Mineral Gallery. Members got a chance to see a piece of the new McDonough meteorite that fell on June 26, 2025. Members were encouraged to wander the gallery and ask questions to Ryan, Jason, or Aaron. All juniors who attended were given a small goody bag with a quartz crystal, kyanite blade, and a piece of staurolite donated by Jason, Aaron, and Nedra.
