Road to the Johnny Bull mine off of INTERSTATE-10
For the last several years I have stopped for lunch off of Interstate 10 on the road to the Johnny Bull mine.  This year was no exception but I did venture a little further away from the Interstate than normal.  I also like to roam around the area during/after eating lunch to see if I can find anything interesting to pick up.  On the West side of the road I started to find small chunks of hematite/goethite scattered along the berm(edge) of the road.  After collecting a couple handfuls of interesting specimens I ventured over to the East side of the gravel road.  This is where I found the mother-lode of hematite/goethite chunks!  There were a number of  specimens over a foot square and four to six inches thick.  These were all solid hematite and weighed at least 30+ to 40+ pounds each!  These will make great yard rocks to add to my collection of Preston (GA) goethite geodes next to my garage.

UPON FURTHER REFLECTION:  These specimens could (most likely) be some sort of industrial metal slag, although they sure look and feel like some sort of Hematite.  Don't know for sure. . . .

They have made interesting yard rocks . . .
