TUCSON GEM & MINERAL SHOWS

The BIG Jewelry Shows in Tucson
American Gem Traders Association Show

TUCSON CONVENTION CENTER......
A high end loose cut colored stone show with some finished jewelry.  Dealers have to pay a membership fee to belong to and be certified by this gem trade group.  The AGTA imposes very high standards on their member dealers to ensure the highest of ethics in the gem business.

(2005)

Peridot and Diamonds. . . by Van Cleef & Arpels

Platinum necklace - 31 faceted Pakistani peridots with a total weight of 228.22 ct.
Diamonds - (D-E in color and VVS in clarity)
Bracelet - 16 matching peridots with a total weight of 79.57 ct.
Earrings - total weight of 24.31 ct.
(2005)
The last two years (2005-2006) there has been a definite trend toward more finished colored stone jewelry.  AGTA opened (2005) up a new venue at the convention center called the "Spectrum of Design" which was populated with original design, high end jewelers.  This is still the high end show, if you want the best of the best in colored stones!  AGTA requires their members to list gemstone enhancement codes in a column next to all gemstone descriptions.  They also provide an on-site gemstone testing lab to verify gem quality and country of origin.
Jewelry and Gem EXchange Show
TENT SHOW...... Across the street from the Tucson Convention Center.
This high end finished jewelry and loose cut stone show is probably the third ranked of these shows.  Some lower quality jewelry and trinkets but a number of better dealers mixed in.  Worth a good look if your into jewelry.

(2006)  Nothing much different again this year.  Still worth a look for finished jewelry.

Worldwide Gem & Jewelry Show
Hotel Arizona (formerly the Radisson)
Northwest side of the Tucson Convention Center.
[New in 2006]

It was suggested by a number of buyers who I spoke with that the GJX tent show is also running the new Worldwide Gem & Jewelry Show across the street at the Hotel Arizona (formerly the Radisson)  In 2005, the GLDA show moved out of the old Radisson and out to the new Marriott Resort & Spa in Starr Pass.  The old Radisson was vacant of dealers in 2005.  In 2006, the new show called, "Worldwide Gem & Jewelry Show", is back in this old hotel and is bigger than ever with a lot more dealers present than when GLDA was there.   Unfortunately for the dealers, the jewelry and cut stone buyers were not reminded that there was a show back at the old Radisson.  All those dealers and not many buyers.   Like the GJX tent show, this one is worth a look because of the shear diversity of dealers.  Both of these shows have something for everyone if your a careful shopper.
Gem and Lapidary Dealer Association Show
This high-end finished jewelry and loose cut stone show is probably second in rank behind the AGTA Show.  No trinkets but not as high a quality as AGTA.  This show has a lot of diamond dealers.  Worth a look for some deals.

In 2005, the GLDA show moved out of the old Radisson and out to the new Marriott Resort & Spa in Starr Pass.  I think that this was a mistake because of the distant location and lack of adequate (none) parking.  This type of high-end jewelry dealer requires a rather fancy setting to exhibit their quality of wares but the location and parking is a killer at this show.  The GLDA has tried exclusive shuttle service from the location of the other high end jewelry shows (AGTA-GJX-WGJS).

Parking is always a BIG problem at the downtown shows!
