  4th of July Butte
4th of July Butte and the Chimney Beds have been a favorite of rockhounds for many years.  Both locations are within a few miles of each other down 14 miles of dirt road.  Be prepared to dig because there is not much float to pick up.

Unfortunately, as was the case during many of our outings, the exact location of where to look was kind of hit or miss.  Unless you have the GPS locations or have been here many time, the landscape all looks pretty much the same for miles.  Of course, you really can't miss the Butte which dominates the view to the southwest.   Therefore, we didn't find much except for a few geodes lined with quartz crystals.  Bill Jaeger took his truck on an exploring trip on another trail into the 4th of July Butte area and found a few small agates with beautiful fortifications.  The cost of his trip was the loss of the whole right side window of this truck topper.

Here we see Doris Mott (foreground), Treasurer of the Gem & Mineral Society of Louisiana, inspecting small geodes for quartz crystals while, Faye Burke (background) is surveying the upper hill area.
